The cultivation of watermelon dates back over 4,000 years and was depicted by early

Honeydew

Pick a melon with a creamy, greenish-ivory color and a smooth, waxy feel. There is

no smooth stem end. Also sniff for a mild, sweet fragrance.

Crenshaw

Look for a smooth mottled-green rind that are turning golden and softening. There is a strong distinct melon fragrance present when melon is ready to eat.

Casaba

This melon has a tough, wrinkly rind that turns yellow when ripe. Fragrance is

Let’s get into the sources. First of all, have you heard of Ted Kennedy? He is the senate chairman of the education committee. Recently, he and President Bush came to an agreement on education finance. As a result, over $20 billion will move from other programs into the Pell grant program – which you may have applied to.

Everybody knows about Pell grants. Just thought you’d like to know that more people will receive Pells in the years ahead. Now on to more sources you may not have heard of yet.

Have you heard of the National Sea Grant College Program? It is an office of the federal government that studies seas and oceans. They offer grants to college students in every coastal and great lakes state. Think about all that coastline – that’s a lot of states! This is their website:

The above programs are great. And the federal government offers in addition to the Pell grant, the Federal Supplemental Equal Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), the Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG), and the Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART grants). But that’s just the start. You may not have enough for school even after all the federal programs listed above. Many more programs exist for you to check into for college grant money. For instance, have you checked with your state lately?

Every one of the fifty states has at least one program of its own. Some, like California and New York State, have several. You might be surprised when you look up your state. You can get government money for college all across the country.

And it doesn’t stop their. Do you live in a territory or the District of Columbia? Puerto Rico and Washington D.C. both have excellent student grant programs. The only territory you might have trouble with: The Northern Marianas, you know, Saipan, Tinian, Rota, it’s an island chain. And maybe American Samoa. Otherwise, you should find a program you can apply to for aid.

As you might expect, some of the smaller states don’t compare to the large, more populous ones. These will have fewer programs, perhaps just one or two. The large states, like Texas, will have many more. Having choices in your college funding helps as you look for tuition money. This short article search for grants.

Some states offer grants for students at vocational schools or even for part time students or nontraditional students returning to school. Very helpful that people have set up programs like this for so many who need help.

One other idea. Many states have banded together to offer discounts and exceptions for out of state students in certain cases or for certain schools. I hadn’t seen these agreements before researching and writing about government money for college opportunities. It turns out that a group of states in the Rockies and west formed an alliance, as did a group of states in the south. A few plains states also offer waivers, but not as a group.

This can help you attend a good school that would normally be out of reach if you fall in the right category. Instead of paying out of state tuition, you can get an exception and pay in state tuition as if you were a normal resident, and finish your degree.

For state programs, take a look at your state government site and look for higher education programs. Then, look for a grants page or one about financial aid. With some looking, you can find these great programs.

No. With Social Security an instable option at best and with pension plans going the way of the dinosaur, you’re pretty much on your own when it comes to retirement. Your child, however, will have several options when it comes to paying for college. Financial aid, student loans and scholarships are just the beginning. Simply put, the 529 plan is a state-sponsored vehicle to help you save pre-tax dollars to go towards your child’s college education. There are two 529 options: the savings plan and the prepaid tuition plan.

Through the prepaid plan, you’re able to pay for your child’s school at today’s tuition rates, even though they won’t actually be attending until years down the road. The amount in your 529 account is guaranteed to pay for tuition to your state’s public colleges and universities when your child is ready to attend. It’s quite the deal, though it usually doesn’t cover room and board costs.

One of the main drawbacks is that you or your child will have to be a resident of the state where your child attends college, which puts a damper on things if your California kid suddenly decides they want to attend Harvard. It depends on the contract, though. Some 529 plans do allow students to attend private or out-of-state universities, but you might have to forfeit some of the value of your account.

A safer and more flexible option than the prepaid plan is the 529 college savings plan. Through it, your child will be free to attend any university, public or private, in-state or out, and it includes room and board. The downside? The money you put into the college savings plan is only good towards whatever the cost of college is at the time your child is ready to enroll. No one know what that’ll be, but it won’t be cheap.

Most states put a cap on lifetime contributions to 529 college savings plans that range between $100,000 and $275,000, though most don’t have a limit on how much you can invest annually. Problem is, contributions of over $12,000 per year ($24,000 if you’re married) are subject to a gift tax. There’s a loophole here, however. You can invest up to $60,000 in one year to a 529 and it will be treated as five yearly payments of $12,000. But beware; going this route will leave you unable to make another deposit for the next five years.

So where does your money go when you put it into a 529 savings plan? Much like a 401(k), the goals is to invest aggressively early on, then choose the safer path the closer you get to needing the money. If you choose an age-based portfolio, your money will be invested in stocks early in your child’s life, and then moved to the bond market as he or she gets closer to college.

The 529 plan offers enormous tax savings if you use the money for its stated causeputting your child through college. Though your contributions to the fund are not considered tax-deductible, it will grow free of taxes and any withdrawal is also not subject to federal taxes. Depending on where you live, you might also get state tax deductions or exemptions from contributions or withdrawals.

The one big-time fallback to the 529 is the fact that it may limit your chances of receiving financial aid. That’s because withdrawals from the account are considered part of your child’s income, and will be assessed for financial aid purposes. It may or may not be an issue, depending on how much you have saved in the 529 account.
